Surrendering to God – Lena C

Unanswered Questions
I was brought up in a Taoist family, and being an inquisitive person, I asked my parents many questions. Most of the time, the answers I got from them were “your ancestors did this, so we follow”.
I didn’t like doing something blindly and I wanted proof and answers. I took up Buddhism as a subject in secondary school to satisfy my inquisitive mind, hoping to find some answers. I was not convinced and so I explored other religions.
I also had some classmates who were Christians and I always enjoyed their company. We didn’t talk about religion whenever we met out but I always wondered why they were so caring, forgiving, and helpful. I understand now that the reason behind their behavior is that they had God.
A Crash Course
I started following Adrian to church after we returned from Australia. I told myself if I wanted to know more about Christianity and Jesus, reading the bible page by page would take me a long time
I needed a crash course.
God seemed to answer my prayer as the church organized their first Alpha Course last year. I thought it was a great opportunity to learn more about Jesus and Christianity, and I remember Pastor Ivan’s catch-line – “No question is too difficult to ask; No question is too silly”. I decided to sign up for the Alpha Course and I’ve never looked back.
Finding Answers to Questions
During the course, I learned more about Jesus and why Jesus died for us. Prior to attending the weekly classes, I always asked myself “why should Jesus die for us?”, “It is unbelievable. Why does he need to do so?”, “It doesn’t make sense”.
The Alpha Course was very casual and informal. First, we would have a speaker discussing a certain topic for the evening and we would then divide into smaller groups to discuss the topic with one another and a discussion leader. During the discussion sessions, we were encouraged to ask any questions, or voice any doubts or concerns we had in our minds. I found it very useful especially for non-believers or new Christians like me. The Alpha Course not only cleared the doubts I had, it was also the start of my walk with Christ.
Surrendering to God
Before becoming a Christian, although I was appreciative of everything I had, I didn’t understand why things happened the way they did and would get upset and stressed easily. Not that I am without stress now, but I have learnt to surrender all things to God and He will handle it. I am happier and have faith that God has a purpose for me and things will happen when it happens. Before, I was generally an optimistic person. Now, I am a carefree person.
Thank God for everything!!!
